أوطأ بحيرة عذبة على الأرض، مئتا متر تحت سطح البحر، تحيط بها تلال تصفرّ في الصيف وتخضرّ ستة أسابيع في الربيع. وتتفجر ينابيع حارة على الشاطئ الجنوبي منذ العهد الروماني، وكانت حماماتها مشهورة في الإمبراطورية كلها. وكانت المدينة قبل ١٩٤٨ مدينة فلسطينية كبيرة بسكان عرب ويهود مختلطين، وهُدم حيها القديم في معظمه بعد ذلك، وما يقوم اليوم أحدث. تعال للماء والضوء لا للشوارع.
The lowest freshwater lake on earth, two hundred metres below sea level, ringed by hills that go gold in summer and green for six weeks in spring. Hot springs bubble up along the southern shore and have done since Roman times — the baths there were famous across the empire. The town was a major Palestinian city before 1948 with a mixed Arab and Jewish population; its old quarter was largely demolished afterwards, and what stands now is mostly newer. Come for the water and the light rather than the streets.
