بلدة جبلية من أدراج حجرية وأزقة ضيقة، كانت إحدى المدن الأربع المقدسة في التقليد اليهودي، وكانت قبل ١٩٤٨ مدينة فلسطينية بأغلبية عربية كبيرة. وتتوّج القلعة الصليبية قمتها. والحي العربي القديم أسفلها صار اليوم مستعمرة الفنانين، وإن نظرت إلى المباني بدل المعارض قرأت ما كانت. وصفد باردة، يتساقط فيها الثلج معظم الشتاءات، وهو ما يفاجئ من يظن فلسطين بلداً حاراً.
A mountain town of stone stairs and narrow lanes that was one of the four holy cities of Jewish tradition and, before 1948, a Palestinian city with a large Arab majority. The Crusader citadel crowns the summit. The old Arab quarter below it is now the artists' colony, and if you look at the buildings rather than the galleries you can read what they were. Safad is cold — it snows most winters, which surprises visitors who think of Palestine as a hot country.
