أكبر مدينة فلسطينية داخل إسرائيل، والعاصمة الثقافية لفلسطينيي الداخل الذين بقوا سنة ١٩٤٨. وكنيسة البشارة أكبر كنيسة في الشرق الأوسط، وتستحق الدخول لسبب يعلو على غيره: كل بلد ساهم أرسل فسيفساء للعذراء بأسلوبه الوطني، فصار الصحن جداراً من المريمات: يابانية وكاميرونية ومكسيكية وتايلندية. وأسفلها يتلوى السوق القديم صعوداً، والجامع الأبيض القريب بناه في القرن التاسع عشر شيخ قصد أن يجعله مكاناً يلتقي فيه المسيحيون والمسلمون.

The Basilica of the Annunciation is the biggest church in the Middle East and is worth entering for one reason above the rest: each country that contributed sent a mosaic of the Virgin in its own national style, so the courtyard is a wall of Marys — Japanese, Cameroonian, Mexican, Thai. Below it the old souq winds uphill, and the White Mosque nearby was built in the 1800s by a sheikh who deliberately made it a place where Christians and Muslims met.
