طُف حول المبنى من الخارج كاملاً قبل أن تتأمل أي تفصيل. فهو مثمّن يحتضن دائرة تحتضن صخرة، ولا تنكشف هندسته إلا بالحركة. القاشاني الذي تراه عثماني، أضافه سليمان القانوني في خمسينيات القرن السادس عشر واستُبدل مراراً، أما الكسوة الأصلية فكانت فسيفساء. وذهب القبة تكسية من التسعينيات بالألمنيوم وورق الذهب، وقبلها كانت برونزاً باهتاً، وكبار المقدسيين يذكرون التغيير. اقرأ شريط الكتابة في الداخل: أكثر من مئتي متر بالخط الكوفي، من أقدم النصوص القرآنية الباقية، وقد وُضع هناك بوصفه حجة موجهة إلى المدينة المسيحية البيزنطية التي ورثها البناة للتو.
Walk the full circle around the outside before looking at anything closely. The building is an octagon holding a circle holding a rock, and the geometry only reveals itself when you move. The tiles you see are Ottoman, added by Suleiman the Magnificent in the 1550s and replaced repeatedly since — the original exterior was mosaic. The dome's gold is a 1990s recovering of aluminium and gold leaf; before that it was a dull anodised bronze, and older Jerusalemites still remember the change. Read the inscription band that runs inside: it is over two hundred metres of Kufic script and among the oldest Qur'anic text in existence, and it was placed there as an argument, addressed to the Byzantine Christian city the builders had just inherited.
