ست كنائس تتقاسم هذا المبنى ولا تأتمن إحداها الأخرى على المفتاح. المفتاح عند عائلة جودة المسلمة، ويفتحه كل صباح آل نسيبة وهم مسلمون أيضاً، وهو ترتيب مستمر منذ قرون لأنه الوحيد الذي قبلت به الطوائف الست. ابحث عن السلّم الخشبي تحت النافذة في الواجهة. لا يجوز لأحد تحريكه، لأن تحريكه يعني الحسم في ملكية تلك الحافة. وهو هناك منذ سنة ١٧٥٧ على الأقل. وفي الداخل، الازدحام نفسه هو المعنى: الجلجلة أعلى الدرج إلى يمينك، وحجر المسحة أمامك على الأرض، والقبر تحت القبة الكبرى، وكل ذلك مضغوط في مساحة صغيرة لأن بنّائي قسطنطين ضمّوا مقلعاً وبستاناً وموضع إعدام تحت سقف واحد.
Six churches share this building and none of them trusts the others with the key. The key is held by the Joudeh family, Muslims, and opened each morning by the Nusseibeh family, also Muslims, an arrangement running for centuries because it was the only one all six could accept. Look for the wooden ladder under the window on the facade. Nobody may move it, because moving it would mean deciding who owns that ledge. It has been there since at least 1757.
