أنت تقف على منصة مرتفعة ظلّت حرماً مقدساً نحو ثلاثة آلاف سنة. امشِ فيها على مهل. يضم الحرم قرابة مئتي منشأة: مصلّيات وقباب وأسبلة ومدارس وصحن مفتوح تجلس فيه العائلات يوم الجمعة. المبنى الجنوبي ذو القبة الرصاصية هو الجامع، أُعيد بناؤه مراراً بعد الزلازل، والمثمّن الذهبي في الوسط مقام منفصل. انظر إلى البلاط تحتك: رقعة من العصور، أموي بجانب عثماني بجانب ترميم من العام الماضي. وتحت قدميك أقبية هيرودية استخدمها الصليبيون إسطبلات. أنصت للأذان هنا، فصوته يعبر البلدة القديمة كلها وترده الأسوار إليك.
You are standing on a raised platform that has been a sacred enclosure for roughly three thousand years. Walk it slowly. The compound holds around two hundred structures — prayer halls, domes, fountains, madrasas, and open courtyard where families picnic on Fridays. The southern building with the lead-grey dome is the congregational mosque, rebuilt many times after earthquakes; the golden octagon at the centre is a separate shrine. Look down at the paving: it is a patchwork of eras, Umayyad next to Ottoman next to repairs made last year. Under your feet are Herodian vaults the Crusaders used as stables. The olive trees along the northern wall were planted within living memory but the practice of keeping a grove here is far older. Listen for the call to prayer here — the sound crosses the whole Old City and the walls throw it back at you.
