The best walk in Palestine. A canyon cut into bare desert rock with a green thread of water along its floor, an aqueduct the Romans built still carrying that water, and the monastery of Saint George hanging off the cliff face halfway down — sixth century, rebuilt, still inhabited by a handful of monks. You can walk the whole thing from Mitzpe Yeriho down to Jericho in about five hours, or drive to the monastery viewpoint and walk twenty minutes down. Take far more water than you think you need.
