أقدم مرفأ عامل على هذا الساحل، وكان قروناً الباب الذي دخل منه كل شيء إلى فلسطين: الحجاج والمطابع، وخرج منه البرتقال. وقبل ١٩٤٨ كانت يافا أكبر مدن فلسطين وعاصمتها الثقافية: صحف ودور سينما ودور نشر واقتصاد صابون وحمضيات يصل إلى ليفربول وترييستي. تمشَّ في المرفأ ثم في سوق البالة ثم اصعد إلى أزقة العجمي حيث ما زالت عائلات فلسطينية تعيش. وبرج الساعة العثماني في الساحة بُني سنة ١٩٠٣ ليوبيل السلطان، وسور البحر تحت الجامع هو حيث كانت تُحمَّل المراكب.
The oldest working harbour on this coast, and for centuries the door through which everything entered Palestine — pilgrims, printing presses, and out the other way, oranges. Before 1948 Jaffa was the largest Palestinian city and its cultural capital: newspapers, cinemas, publishing houses, a soap and citrus economy that reached Liverpool and Trieste. Walk the harbour, then the flea market, then up into the lanes of Ajami where Palestinian families still live. The Ottoman clock tower on the main square was built in 1903 for the sultan's jubilee, and the sea wall below the mosque is where the boats loaded.
