Ibrahimi Mosque

The outer wall is Herodian, the same masonry technique and the same hand as the Western Wall in Jerusalem, and it has stood without mortar for two thousand years. There is no other enclosure of its kind left standing to full height anywhere. Inside is a cave nobody has properly entered in centuries, containing the traditional tombs of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Leah — which is why this is the second holiest site in Palestine for Muslims and among the holiest for Jews. Since 1994 the building has been physically divided, roughly 60 per cent as synagogue and 40 as mosque, with separate entrances and metal detectors. That division is not ancient and it is not neutral, and you will feel it. Go anyway. The Mamluk minbar inside the mosque side, brought from Ashkelon by Saladin in 1191, is one of the finest carved wooden objects in the Islamic world.
