أوطأ يابسة مكشوفة على الكوكب، نحو أربعمئة وثلاثين متراً تحت سطح البحر وتنخفض نحو متر كل سنة، لأن نهر الأردن الذي كان يغذيه يُسحب في أعلاه. والماء أملح من المحيط نحو عشر مرات، فأنت لا تسبح فيه بل تستلقي عليه. لا تحلق قبل النزول، ولا تُدخل وجهك، واغتسل خلال عشرين دقيقة. والشاطئ الشمالي فيه مصايف فلسطينية قرب أريحا. وقد انفتحت حفر انهيارية على أجزاء من الساحل مع انحسار الماء، فالزم الأرض المعلّمة.
The lowest exposed land on the planet — about 430 metres below sea level and dropping about a metre every year, because the Jordan river that fed it is drawn off upstream. The water is roughly ten times saltier than the ocean, so you do not swim in it, you lie on it. Do not shave beforehand, do not put your face in, and rinse within twenty minutes. The northern shore has Palestinian beaches near Jericho. Sinkholes have opened along parts of the shoreline as the water retreats; stay on marked ground.
