مدينة مسوّرة تنزل مباشرة إلى البحر. وتحتها مدينة صليبية كاملة: قاعات ومرفق طعام ونفق يمتد إلى المرفأ، دُفنت حين بنى العثمانيون مدينتهم فوقها ولم تُكتشف إلا في القرن العشرين. وفوق الأرض عكا أحمد باشا الجزار: جامعه الكبير وحمّامه والسوق المسقوف والأسوار التي صدّت نابليون شهرين سنة ١٧٩٩ حتى استسلم ورحل. امشِ على السور البحري عند الغروب وشاهد الصبيان يقفزون منه إلى الماء كما يفعلون دائماً.
A walled city that steps straight into the sea. Underneath it lies an entire Crusader town — halls, a refectory, a tunnel running to the harbour — buried when the Ottomans built their city on top and rediscovered only in the twentieth century. Above ground it is Ahmad Pasha al-Jazzar's Acre: his great mosque, his hammam, the covered souq, and the walls that held Napoleon out for two months in 1799 until he gave up and marched away. Walk the sea wall at sunset and watch boys jump off it into the water, as they have always done.
