مدينة بحرية مسوّرة، موقع تراث عالمي، وأحد المواضع القليلة التي تجلس فيها بلدة عثمانية فوق أخرى صليبية وما زالتا قائمتين. تمشي في شوارع القرن الثامن عشر ثم تنزل درجاً إلى قاعات الفرسان الصليبية الواسعة ثم إلى نفق حفره الداوية إلى المرفأ. وفوق الأرض: جامع الجزار وخان العمدان ببرج ساعته وسوق مسقوف ومرفأ صيد ما زالت مراكبه تخرج. وقد صمد أحمد باشا الجزار بهذه الأسوار أمام نابليون شهرين سنة ١٧٩٩ فرحل نابليون دون المدينة، وهي الموضع الوحيد الذي توقفت عنده حملته الشرقية.
A walled sea city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of the few places where an Ottoman town sits directly on top of a Crusader one, still standing. You walk the eighteenth-century streets, then descend a staircase into vast Crusader knights' halls, then a tunnel the Templars cut to the harbour. Above ground: al-Jazzar Mosque, the Khan al-Umdan with its clock tower, a covered market and a fishing port where the boats still go out. Ahmad Pasha al-Jazzar held these walls against Napoleon for two months in 1799 and Napoleon left without the city — the only place his eastern campaign stopped.
