Cross-stitch worked in silk thread on a linen or cotton thob, and until living memory it was a language. A trained eye could read a woman's village, her marital status and often her family's means from the pattern on her chest panel alone. Ramallah used a deep red on white; Bethlehem was famous for couched gold and silver; Hebron used dense dark reds; Gaza had its own narrow motifs. After 1948 the village system broke and patterns began to mix in the camps, which is itself now a documented style.
