وُلد في البروة، قرية شرق عكا لم تعد موجودة. غادرها في السادسة وقضى سنة في لبنان، ثم عاد ليجد قريته قد اختفت ويجد نفسه مصنّفاً حاضراً غائباً: في البلاد قانونياً، ومن لا مكان فيها قانونياً. وكتب عن تلك الفجوة بقية حياته. واعتُقل في التاسعة عشرة لأنه قرأ قصيدة. وصار الشاعر الذي يحفظ كل عربي تقريباً بيتاً له، ورفض عقوداً أن يُسمّى رمزاً وطنياً، قائلاً إن ذلك يسطّح القصائد ويحوّلها شعارات.
Born in Al-Birwa, a village east of Acre that no longer exists. He left at six, spent a year in Lebanon, and returned to find his village gone and himself classed as a 'present absentee' — legally in the country, legally not from anywhere in it. He wrote about that gap for the rest of his life. At nineteen he was arrested for reading a poem. He became the poet nearly every Arab can quote a line of, and refused for decades to be called a national symbol, saying it flattened the poems into slogans.
