الاسم من دبك أي ضرب الأرض بالقدم. والتفسير المتداول عملي: كانت بيوت القرى بأسطح مسطحة من طين وأغصان تتشقق وهي تجف، فيتشابك الجيران بالأذرع ويدبكون على السطح بإيقاع ليرصّوه. وسواء كان هذا أصلها أم لا، فشكل الرقصة ما زال يحمله: صف وأيدٍ متشابكة وقائد في الرأس بمنديل يرتجل بينما يحفظ الجميع الخطوة.
The name comes from dabaka, to stamp the foot. The usual explanation is practical: village houses had flat roofs of mud and branches which cracked as they dried, so neighbours would link arms and stamp along the roof in rhythm to pack it down. Whether or not that is the origin, the shape of the dance still holds it — a line, hands joined, one leader at the head with a handkerchief who improvises while everyone else keeps the step.
